Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) Ablation
SVT ablation is a radiofrequency catheter ablation that creates scar tissue within the upper chambers of the heart in order to block the electrical signals that cause an abnormal rapid heartbeat.
The procedure
It is performed under local anaesthetic or a sedative.
During the procedure, catheters will be guided into your heart via a vein in your groin. The catheters are used to transmit electrical energy (radiofrequency ablation) to the target area of the right or left the upper chamber of your heart, which damages the tissue and causes scarring. This will hopefully block the electrical signals that are contributing to your SVT. The target for ablation is usually an extra wire in the heart or an ectopic autonomous focus in the heart.
The procedure usually takes 2-3 hours and once completed you will be monitored in the clinic. Depending on your condition, you may be able to return home the same day, or you may need to stay overnight.
