Dr Guy Haywood

MA BChir(Camb) MD FRCP

Dr Guy Haywood established the complex electrophysiology service at the South West Cardiothoracic Centre, Plymouth in 2004. He trained in the UK gaining a 1st class degree at Cambridge and Distinction in finals at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. His further research at St George’s Hospital London and Stanford University, California resulted in his MD degree.

He has a special interest in the treatment of atrial fibrillation having successfully performed over 750 atrial fibrillation ablations and led the European Hybrid AF ablation group which published the largest experience of ablation in this specialist field earlier this year (2020). He performs catheter ablation , pacing and ICD implants and percutaneous coronary intervention.

Dr Haywood is actively involved in arrhythmia research and the commercial development of new ablation catheters. He has patented new techniques in the field of heart rhythm treatment and has served on steering/endpoint, and data safety monitoring committees for major BHF and NIHR trials. He has been closely involved in the training of many of the Consultant Cardioloigsts in the South West and previously acted as training program director for the South West UK.

Charity work has included the Executive Committee of the Arrhythmia Alliance as well as South West heart rhythm charities. It was via the Heartswell charity that he led the first phase of the project that ultimately resulted in the Peninsula Heart Clinic being established in Plymouth.

Dr Ryan Moran is a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

Dr Girish Viswanathan

Dr Girish Viswanathan is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in coronary artery disease intervention. He was appointed as a Consultant in 2014 at the South West Cardiothoracic Centre, Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP), Plymouth, UK.

Dr Viswanathan graduated in 1997 from India with subsequent post-graduate training in internal medicine from Madras Medical College and Medical University in 2001. He then joined the Manchester deanery where he underwent further medical training receiving his MRCP (UK) and higher speciality training in cardiology (CCT) from Wales in 2012. He also undertook an advanced coronary intervention fellowship at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital before being appointed at UHP.

His areas of expertise include the treatment of simple and complex coronary artery disease, coronary physiology, intra coronary imaging including IVUS and OCT, coronary chronic total occlusions, and cardiovascular risk factor management.  He has performed over 900 coronary interventions at Derriford hospital since being appointed with nationally published lower than expected mortality rates and complications. His cases are regularly shown at international meetings to aid teaching and as examples of best practice.

Dr Viswanathan is currently the Clinical Director for Cardiology Services at UHP and steers a variety of committees including being lead for the South West Regional Cardiac Network.  He is also responsible for data quality and submissions of National audits – the cardiology department at UHP is the only centre in the South West to achieve the 72 hour target for treating patients admitted with acute coronary syndromes and continues to have the best survival figures in the whole region.

He regularly teaches medical and dental students attached to Plymouth University and supervises Cardiac Physiology students and Physician associates. He also trains junior doctors for the MRCP examinations as well as senior cardiology trainees wishing to specialise in coronary intervention.

Dr Venkatesan Suresh

I completed my undergraduate training in India and my general medicine training in the UK and was awarded MRCP London in 1998. I became a Fellow of Royal college of Physicians London (FRCP) in 2008. After intense postgraduate training in general and interventional cardiology in South-West of England, I obtained my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in cardiology in 2009.

My research was on stem cells contributing the healing of heart muscle after a heart attack in Wythenshawe, Manchester. I was awarded MD by the University of Manchester in 2008.

I have been practicing as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at University Hospitals Plymouth in 2009.

I specialise in performing radial coronary angiogram, simple and complex angioplasties, pacemaker implantation.

I specialise in performing structural heart disease intervention including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI – Keyhole surgery) and Transcatheter Mitral valve edge to edge repair (TEER) – Keyhole surgery).

I perform high volume coronary angioplasties and structural heart disease interventional procedures with an excellent outcome.

I am currently a member of British Cardiac Interventional Society (BCIS), British Cardiac Society (BCS) and Fellow of Royal College of Physicians London (FRCP).

Clinical Interests
I have performed over 5000 diagnostic coronary angiograms and graft studies including arterial conduits. I have performed over 2000 PCI procedures (angioplasty) including pressure wire studies, rotablation, shockwave, intravascular ultrasound and OCT, all with good outcomes. I insert permanent pacemakers and have experience of congenital heart disease as well as managing a wide range of general cardiology conditions.
