Dr Murphy was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital in 1993. He qualified from St Thomas’s Hospital and did his postgraduate training at St Mary’s Hospital, St Thomas’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Bristol and Melbourne, Australia. He set up the anaesthetic and intensive care services for the South West Cardiothoracic Centre which opened in 1997 and worked there until he retired from Derriford Hospital in 2022. He held a number of senior medical management positions at Derriford Hospital, served on two NICE committees and was an examiner for The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Peter has worked at the Peninsula Heart Clinic since February 2021 and is present on two days a week, primarily providing anaesthetic services for Dr Guy Haywood’s AF Ablation Service.
His outside interests include keeping physically fit (running, kayaking, cycling), golf, watching live sport and travel with his wife. He is married with three children.
