Cardiac Device Extraction

Cardiac Device Extraction

The procedure

Cardiac device extraction refers to the removal of a cardiac device, most commonly a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) device that has been placed in a patient to regulate the heart.

In most cases this procedure occurs when a device (usually one or more of the leads) has suffered a mechanical malfunction or has become infected and needs to be replaced. Cardiac device extraction is a very specialised procedure and requires particular expertise.

Device extraction requires careful consideration and assessment and your cardiologist will be able to make the necessary evaluation to advise you of the best treatment options and the risks associated with this.
